Hiking 50 Miles Alone on the Ak-Suu Traverse in Kyrgyzstan
Solo hiking and filmmaking through glacier valleys, alpine passes, and untouched wilderness
In June 2025, I, Kraig Adams — a filmmaker and minimalist hiker — walked 50 miles alone across the Ak-Suu Traverse in Kyrgyzstan, a remote and breathtaking route through the Tian Shan Mountains.
This four-day journey took me through glacier valleys, high alpine passes, and landscapes untouched by tourism or noise. I filmed it as both a documentary-style travel video and a 3-hour ambient hiking film, letting the sounds of nature and solitude tell the story.

About the Ak-Suu Traverse
The Ak-Suu Traverse is a 50-mile route in northeastern Kyrgyzstan, near the Kazakhstan border. It winds through the Tian Shan Mountains — a landscape of glaciers, turquoise lakes, and steep alpine valleys.
Few people hike it each year, making it ideal for solo trekkers and filmmakers looking for true wilderness.

The Journey
Day 1 – Into the Mountains
Starting near Karakol, I followed a glacial river through green meadows and pine forest. As the elevation rose, so did the silence. I set up camp beneath peaks dusted with late snow, the wind humming like static through the valley.
Day 2 – Mist and Rain
Morning brought fog and steady rain. I crossed cold rivers and climbed toward the first pass, clouds swallowing the peaks ahead. The day ended early, camped by a grey stream with no one in sight.
Day 3 – The High Pass
The hardest day — steep, slow, and exposed. Every step above 3,500 meters came with wind and thin air. But reaching the top made it all worth it: glaciers below, distant valleys in blue haze, and the reminder of how small I am in this landscape.
Day 4 – Descent and Reflection
The final day descended into green valleys and forest again. My legs were heavy, but the quiet joy of finishing a solo route like this made each step lighter.
Filming Alone in the Mountains
I filmed everything solo — tripod shots, drone footage, and long takes of walking and camp life. Filming while hiking is a balance: conserving energy while still capturing something beautiful and true.

Lessons from Solitude
Hiking alone in Kyrgyzstan taught me what silence feels like when it’s absolute. No notifications. No noise. Just breath, wind, and the click of the camera shutter.
It’s easy to forget how rare true solitude is. The Ak-Suu Traversebrought it back — a reminder that peace isn’t found at the summit, but somewhere in the long, steady climb to get there.

The Ak-Suu Traverse reminded me why I make these films — to slow down, to listen, and to share what stillness looks like in motion.
If you’re planning your own adventure, or just want to experience it through the screen, I hope my YouTube videos and Substack postshelp you find that same quiet joy in the outdoors.
